8 Limbs of Yoga

1. Outer Choices (Yamas)

2. Inner Choices (Niyamas)

3. Physical Postures (Asanas)

4. Breath Control (Pranayama)

5. Sense withdrawal (Pratyahara)

6. Concentration (Dharana)

7. Meditation (Dhyana)

8. Integration (Samadhi)

These 8 limbs together create the path to "enlightenment", "liberation", "bliss", etc. There are many ways to describe the ultimate goal, but the simplest way is to call it "happiness". Each limb supports the rest and when all are practiced properly and regularly, the "true self" can be "truly happy."

The "true self" is the person you already are. It's the "you" that is buried under layers of unhappy experiences and self-inhibiting behaviors that accumulated since birth. It is the "you" that drives your emotions. It's the "you" that suffers when your actions aren't falling inline with your "true" motivations in life.

The first two limbs teach us to observe our daily lives and learn to understand the role that we play in our current situations. The next limbs are physical actions to do with our bodies to enhance the healthy flow of energy throughout and improve strength, flexibility, mobility, and healthy functioning organs. The final limbs continue to move the focus inward, teaching our minds to quiet the unnecessary thoughts and to allow the peace and clarity to come forward.
